Frequently Asked Questions: CTC vs. In-Hand

Clear answers to common questions on CTC structure, take-home calculations, Budget 2024 tax slabs, and Section 87A rebate rules.

Why is CTC not equal to monthly in-hand salary multiplied by 12?

Cost to Company (CTC) measures the total expense incurred by an employer to hire you, not your cash pay. CTC bundles employer-side statutory contributions (Employer EPF 12%, Gratuity 4.81%, employer group health insurance) that are subtracted before your gross salary is determined. From that gross salary, employee-side statutory deductions (Employee EPF 12%, Professional Tax, and Income Tax TDS) are further subtracted, resulting in monthly net take-home pay that is typically 15% to 30% lower than CTC divided by 12.

Can I opt out of employer EPF or gratuity to increase my in-hand salary?

You cannot opt out of EPF entirely if your basic salary at your first job was under ₹15,000/month. However, you can request your employer to cap your EPF contribution at the statutory ₹1,800/month ceiling rather than paying 12% on your entire basic pay. Gratuity cannot be paid out monthly because it is a statutory terminal retirement benefit under the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972.

Does New Tax Regime increase in-hand salary compared to Old Tax Regime?

Yes, for taxpayers without extensive rent or home loan deductions. The New Tax Regime offers lower slab rates and a higher ₹75,000 Standard Deduction. For instance, on a ₹10 LPA salary, the New Regime deducts ~₹3,900/month in TDS compared to ~₹7,800/month under the Old Regime unless you claim over ₹3.4 Lakhs in deductions.
